AngusSource® “the new source” for Certified Angus Beef® (CAB®)
USDA-certified branded beef programs allow two methods to make a breed claim: genotype and phenotype. For nearly 30 years, 51% or greater black hair coat has been the phenotypic criteria for identifying Angus-influenced cattle for branded programs. Now, calves enrolled in the American Angus Association’s AngusSource program are eligible under the genotypic method. AngusSource, a USDA approved Process Verified Program (PVP), documents source and group age, and it ensures cattle have a minimum of 50% Angus-sired genetics. To be eligible, cattle must be sired by a registered Angus bull and enrolled by the ranch of origin with a documented month, day, and year of birth of the oldest calf in the group. Of course, either method of live animal eligibility is just the first step in becoming qualified to be considered for the CAB brand. Then, carcasses defined as “Angus-type” are presented to the USDA grader and are evaluated for the CAB program’s eight (8) carcass specifications. A CAB eligible carcass must make a quality grade of Middle Choice (Modest 0) or higher to qualify for CAB brand.
The AngusSource program will allow Angus-sired cattle to be considered for CAB, independent of hide color. However, the visual method developed by CAB will probably continue as the predominant method to determine CAB eligibility. With the re-opening of several export markets and the success of all-natural brands, the potential premiums from Angus-sired calves with source and age information continues to grow.
